The Economy of Toledo, Ohio and Southeast Michigan
If you listen to any radio station in Toledo you will be bombarded by messages of how bad the economy is in Toledo. In fact it seems that is all what local DJ’s like Fred Lefebvre want to talk about. Do not get me wrong, I respect Fred as an experienced and talented radio talk show host. I remember listening to KISS FM many years ago when Denny Schaffer was the host. I always enjoyed Fred’s comments. However, I believe the constant banter of the current state of Northwest Ohio has to be turned into something positive.
Fred is just one of the many individuals in the media and community that continually beat this dead horse.
I graduated from the University of Toledo with the excitement of a 7 year old getting their first bicycle. I thought of all the places I could go and how I could get there. When you anticipate your career, it can be the same way. After graduating, I thought I could throw my training wheels in the trash and find that path. I found out I was wrong!
There have been many days where I fall into this self pity that nearly controls my life. All I hear is how bad the economy is and how unjust the political system is. But the truth is, everyone is going through the same thing. So getting carried away in depression will only get you farther from your goal.
I have been working two part time jobs as a Part Time supervisor and an Internet Marketing specialist. I saved my money I earned so I could move out on my own and even buy a house. There were times where my elders suggested I move out of Toledo and go somewhere where there are more opportunities. I nearly followed their suggestions. However, I choose to have faith.
Constructive criticism is one of the most important techniques to master for a manager or an individual living in society. It can lead to innovations and an improvement in performance. However, when there are extreme doses of constructive criticism without possible solutions, the downward spiral begins for overall morale.
That is what I continually hear from members of our society. People speak out with obnoxious outbursts that offer nothing to society. That is exactly what will lead Toledo into a lonely place. This is a place where no business has any confidence in the community within. With this lack of confidence comes the loss of jobs.
There are many factors that are hurting our economy in Toledo and Michigan.
1. Job layoffs
2. Struggling stock market
3. Poor real estate market
4. Poor decisions by key leaders
5. Changes in industry trends
6. Labor unions
7. Wasteful projects
8. lack of pride
9. Not appealing to potential businesses
10. Greed
11. Increasing costs of fuel, food and other commodities
However, far too many people spend their entire strength complaining about that list. No one is perfect. Unfortunately, people will make mistakes and make poor decisions. Some are unwilling to sacrifice their own wishes to do the best for the greatest number of people. The idea of humanity is quite simple. We all are different. We all have different thought processes. But our maturity levels should teach us that our differences should appeal to us to work together to solve problems. It is these different thought processes that could lead to opening doors that may have never opened. Right now we are only using our differences to push each other farther away. I am going to conclude this message with this quote. “Don’t fear failure. Fear not learning anything from your failure”. It is time to do what is right for everyone. Despite thousands of years of education and revelations, humanity still has failed to understand that peace comes from the sharing of our hearts. Not keeping our hearts to ourselves!
Good luck to all the college graduates and the experienced work force in Ohio and Michigan. Your actions in life can lead to the success or downfall of our community.
Good day,
Brennan Deitsch
